About Žďár nad Metují

The first mention of the existence of the village Žďár nad Metují comes from around 1213, when the so-called police district was donated to the Benedictines by King Přemysl Otakar I. The donation was confirmed in 1229 by King Wenceslas I. that since then our region has started to settle. The monks of Břevnov felled forests, established settlements, and fertilized the land. The present form of the Žďár cadastre was completed by the abbot Bavor in 1294, who added a lower part called Bavorov to the village. The Žďár area thus reached as far as the confluence of the Metuje and Žďárský streams in front of the Polička tunnel. Above the confluence rises a steep slope, on which, according to undocumented legends, a fortress called Vlčinec stood in the first half of the 15th century.
